Mundt Memorial Peace Fellowships for Intercultural Service
Twelve $2,500 fellowships for students considering international service
These fellowships offer the opportunity for experiential learning and community service through a generous grant from the Peacemakers Fund at San Diego Foundation. The fellowships are associated with the Peace Corps Program at SDSU. Intercultural learning and community volunteer experience significantly increase the likelihood of a successful Peace Corps application. The Peacemakers Fund support encourages SDSU students to have an impact in the community and consider serving as Peace Corps volunteers after graduation through this fellowship program.
Twelve competitive fellowships of $2,500 each will be available for the academic year, either fall or spring semester. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. These internships are supervised by Professor Hank Johnston, Department of Sociology, through a 3-unit special study course that awardees must enroll in. Professor Johnston will work with fellows to satisfy the academic dimensions of the internships for course credit, which includes a short report, journal entries, and meetings with scholars and professionals to discuss topics about immigrant assimilation. He will also assist fellows in finding volunteer internship positions at immigrant-aid and asylum agencies in San Diego County, such as the International Rescue Committee, Pathways to Citizenship, Casa Cornelia, Catholic Charities' Rescue Shelter, and others.
These fellowships are opportunities for experiential learning that past recipients describe as meaningful and fulfilling. The positions enhance resumés and give experience in crosscultural settings. Importantly, student fellows positively assist new immigrant families as they arrive and settle in San Diego. Administered as part of the Peace Corps Prep Program at SDSU, successful applicants are encouraged to explore the Peace Corps website to explore post-graduation opportunities.
Interested students should contact Professor Johnston at [email protected] for an application form. The application is short and includes an essay of no more than 1000 words.
